The 2020 Spalding Hoophall Classic tips off Thursday at Springfield College’s Blake Arena, and national games begin on Saturday. This year’s slate includes an impressive list of stars and big names -- perhaps one of the best groups in recent years. You can buy tickets here. Here’s a rundown of 12 players you don’t want to miss in Springfield, listed in order of appearance. All rankings are courtesy of ESPN’s recruit rankings. Evan Mobley, Rancho Christian Details: #1 in 2020, USC. 7-foot-0 center. Saturday at 4:30 p. m., Monday at 1 p. m. Who is he? A legitimate 7-footer with great length and mobility, Mobley has high-level defensive potential as a rim protector and sliding defensive presence. He is still filling out his frame and stretching his range, but he could be the type of prospect NBA teams salivate over defensively. Jonathan Kuminga, Patrick School Details: #1 in 2021, uncommitted. 6-foot-7 small forward. Saturday at 6 p. Who is he? An excellent athlete with good ball skills, Kuminga can beat defenders off the dribble in addition to pulling up from 3-point range. Meanwhile, his frame and athleticism suggest high potential as a switchable defender who can guard up. In other words, there’s every reason -- on both sides of the court -- to see a potential No. 1 pick in Kuminga in a few years. Ziaire Williams, Sierra Canyon Details: #5 in 2020, uncommitted. 6-foot-8 small forward. Saturday at 8 p. m., Monday at 11 a. Who is he? Far from the most famous prospect on his own team, Williams might be the best -- a big wing with versatile potential, great feel and excellent mechanics. His shot is still coming around, but he has great touch, which suggests future shooting success. B. J. Boston, Sierra Canyon Details: #12 in 2020, Kentucky. Who is he? It’s easy to fall in love with Boston’s game -- he’s a deadly shooter and an excellent ball-handler at 6-foot-7, and a very good athlete with length. Boston is entirely too skinny, but as he adds weight and strength, his potential could skyrocket. Bronny James/Ziare Wade, Sierra Canyon Details: Saturday at 8 p. Who are they? James and Wade won’t be the most impactful players at the Hoophall this year, but the sons of LeBron James and Dwyane Wade might draw the biggest crowd. Sierra Canyon has been selling out arenas, and while Williams and Boston are the team’s stars, James and Wade are major attractions as well. Terrence Clarke, Brewster Academy Details: #7 in 2020, Kentucky. 6-foot-7 shooting guard. Sunday at 12:30 p. Who is he? Boston’s best prospect is also a lottery prospect. At 6-foot-7 with great feel, excellent athleticism and a great frame, Clarke’s jumper is still a work in progress, but everything else is quite clearly lottery potential. Michael Foster, Hillcrest Prep Details: #7 in 2021, uncommitted. 6-foot-8 power forward. Sunday at 4 p. Who is he? An overpowering athlete with a high motor and high defensive potential, Foster is expanding his range to the 3-point line and has already showed touch around the rim. Foster is the type of prospect who could rise on draft boards with some college film that showcases his defense. Jalen Green, Prolific Prep Details: #3 in 2020, uncommitted. 6-foot-5 shooting guard. Sunday at 5:45 p. Who is he? An otherworldly athlete with good length at 6-foot-5, Green has excellent feel and a lightning fast first step. He can finish high above the rim, and while his jumper isn’t consistent yet, he has shown 3-point range as well. Given his frame and shooting potential, Green -- who is uncommitted as of yet -- has the potential to go No. 1 in 2021. Cade Cunningham, Montverde Academy Details: #2 in 2020, Oklahoma State. 6-foot-7 point guard. Sunday at 7:30 p. m., Monday at 5 p. Who is he? If Green has the potential to go No. 1 in the 2021 draft, Cunningham is the favorite. A 6-foot-7 point guard, Cunningham can do everything -- shoot, pull up, get to the rim, get to the free-throw line and create for others. His size and strength offer defensive potential as well, especially given his high-level basketball IQ. Scottie Barnes, Montverde Academy Details: #8 in 2020, Florida State. Who is he? A high-level athlete with good feel, Barnes is powerfully built at 6-foot-7. He can handle the ball in transition, find teammates and finish high above the rim. His shot is still coming around, but his versatility is intriguing. Sharife Cooper, McEachern Details: #19 in 2020, Auburn. 6-foot-0 point guard. Monday at 5 p. Who is he? Cooper isn’t the highest rated prospect, but he’s one of the most electric. At just 6-foot-0, Cooper’s handle will leave defenders touching the hardwood, and he can score in a variety of ways -- at the rim, in the mid-range and off the bounce from deep. How well his game translates to the NCAA level will be interesting, but he’s borderline unstoppable as a high-school prospect. A remarkable achievement by filmmaker Alla Kovgan, spending seven years to make this classic tribute to the late dancer/choreographer Merce Cunningham.
Working with both archive footage and valuable sound recordings, she conjures up the avant-garde artist through recordings of his work, his philosophy of his art and comments by many close collaborators including notably John Cage and Robert Rauschenberg. Not meant as a biopic, film concentrates on spectacularlhy cinematic (in 3-D) new performances of many of his dances, executed by members of his company, which disbanded in 2011, after Merce's death in 2009.
At a q&a following the screening, Kovgan indicated that Wim Wenders' innovative 2011 3-D dance film about German choreographer Pina Bausch inspired her to take on this formidable project, finally starting shooting in Stuttgart in 2015 with principal photography taking place in 2018.
Her use of 3-D technique is outstanding, resulting in gripping visual images, enhanced by the accompaniment of the original dance scores by John Cage and others. For a novice like me, not overly familiar with Merce's achievements, the movie brings his dance to life and points to how 3-D technology can be used artfully rather than as a gimmick, or its current excuse to permit higher price points for movie admissions to films, both animated and action-oriented, that should play just as well if not better in 2-D on large screens.

Cunningham watch repair. While some playoff matchups have appeared numerous times over the years, others have appeared just once in NFL history. Note that I've avoided Super Bowl matchups (since these tend to produce one-hit-wonder matchups at a much higher rate) but you can feel free to suggest them in the comments. Bears 24 vs Rams 0 (1985 NFC Championship): this game was pure domination from the Bears as Chicago's defense held the Rams to just 130 offensive yards, including just 66 passing yards from Dieter Brock. Jim McMahon and Co managed just enough offense to run away with a comfortable NFC Championship Game en route to the franchise's only Super Bowl win. Bears 35 @ Vikings 18 (1994 NFC Wild Card B Game): Steve Walsh had an effective passing game and although the Vikings kept it close at times, the Bears ran away with the game in the fourth quarter capped off by a fumble recovery for a TD. Warren Moon once again had an ineffective playoff game despite throwing two TDs. These Bears would, unfortunately, get destroyed by the 49ers in the Divisional Round. Bengals 21 vs Seahawks 13 (1988 AFC Divisional Round A Game): although Boomer Esiason had a bad game, the Bengals instead turned to the run where they gained 254 rushing yards and three rushing TDs total (Ickey Woods led Cincinnati's rushers with 126 and a TD). While the Bengals would get shutout in the second half, they didn't allow Seattle to score until the 4th quarter, and on the second TD, kicker Norm Johnson missed a crucial XP to keep the game a 2-possession affair (remember, no 2-point conversion). The Bengals would finish the game quietly to pull off the win. These Bengals would advance to the Super Bowl where they lost a heartbreaker to the 49ers. Bengals 41 vs Oilers 14 (1990 AFC Wild Card B Game): the Bengals benefitted greatly from the Oilers losing Warren Moon early on in the game due to injury, and Boomer Esiason and Co pounced on the opportunity. While the Oilers were held scoreless in the first half, Esiason connected on two TD passes and a TD run in the game that saw the Bengals lead 20-0 at the half and never look back. These Bengals would get knocked out by the Raiders in the Divisional Round. It is also the last playoff victory to date for Cincinnati. Bills 31 @ Jets 27 (1981 AFC Wild Card): this game saw the Bills lead 24-0 at one point only to see the Jets pull off a spirited comeback that fell just short. Joe Cribbs got a crucial rushing TD to weather the storm somewhat in the fourth for the Bills, but the Jets got close to completing the comeback before Buffalo intercepted a pass with two seconds remaining to seal the deal. The Bills would lose a hard-fought game against the Bengals in the Divisional Round. Bills 10 vs Broncos 7 (1991 AFC Championship): in this ugly defensive matchup, neither team scored in the first half and Buffalo only put the game out of reach with just over four minutes remaining in the game on a Scott Norwood field goal. In fact, that was Buffalo's only offensive points of the game as the only TD they scored came on an interception return in the third. Despite leading in many categories of the game, John Elway (who would later have to be replaced due to injury) and Denver's offense was simply stuffed and couldn't score until very late in the 4th quarter when all was already lost. The Bills would go on to get wrecked in the Super Bowl against Washington. Broncos 14 @ Chiefs 10 (1997 AFC Divisional Round B Game): this game was more heartbreaking for the Chiefs as the #1 seed IMO than it was motivational for the Broncos, as the Chiefs had so many opportunities in this game wiped out by missed FGs, not getting both feet in bounds, and a failed 4th down conversion towards the end of the game that was deflected away in the end zone, among other things. John Elway and Co were just able to execute much better and ultimately won the game as a result (en route to the Super Bowl title that year). Cue the Marty Schottenheimer getting eliminated in the postseason again memes. Broncos 38 vs Dolphins 3 (1998 AFC Divisional Round A Game): I still think Dan Marino not winning a Super Bowl is one of the greatest travesties in sports. Despite throwing for 243 yards in this game, the Dolphins only managed three points and were shutout in the second half. John Elway didn't have a flashy day as all he had to do was hand the ball off to Terrell Davis who rushed for 199 yards and 2 TDs. Overall, the Dolphins were completely outmatched for the entire game. As for the Broncos, this was a mere pit stop en route to their second straight Super Bowl title, but before that, there was... Broncos 23 vs Jets 10 (1998 AFC Championship): despite being shutout in the first half, John Elway and Co came out on fire in the second half, destroying the Jets for 20 points in the 3rd quarter after being down 10-0. As for the Jets, they'd continue to play lousy football throughout the 4th quarter, turning the ball over three times in yet another Jets-worthy performance. The Broncos would go on to win the Super Bowl as mentioned earlier. Broncos 24 vs Chargers 17 (2013 AFC Divisional Round B Game): I remember watching this game. Although a Niner fan, I have a soft spot for the Chargers (let's just say I have some nice memories in San Diego) and I was really upset that their comeback fell short in this game, as they were down 17-0 at the half to Peyton Manning and Co. Unfortunately, Peyton Manning pulled out a slightly stronger performance and he led a clutch final drive to run out the clock. These Broncos would make the Super the 43-8 memes, please. Browns 23 vs Jets 20 2OT (1986 AFC Divisional Round A Game): in this exciting affair, the Browns trailed 20-10 in the fourth quarter but scored 10 points with under 2 minutes to go capped off by a Mark Moseley field goal near the end of regulation. OT was a very sloppy affair as both teams missed several opportunities, but it was the Browns who capitalized and Moseley kicked a 27-yarder to win the game for Cleveland in a game known as "The Marathon by the Lake". Bernie Kosar had a monster 487-yard passing game with 1 TD pass to lead the Browns offense. Unfortunately, Cleveland would suffer an excruciating 23-20 OT loss to the Broncos in the AFC Championship Game highlighted by "The Drive". Browns 34 vs Bills 30 (1989 AFC Divisional Round A Game): in this offensive shootout, Bernie Kosar led the Browns with 251 yards and three TDs in a highlight-worthy performance. Jim Kelly threw a late TD pass to make the score 34-30, but bad field conditions contributed to Scott Norwood tripping on the XP attempt, and that proved crucial as the Bills were forced to go for a TD in FG-range on their last drive, which failed as a game-winning catch was dropped and Kelly threw a game-losing interception. The Browns would subsequently lose again to John Elway and the Broncos in the AFC Championship Game. Browns 20 vs Patriots 13 (1994 AFC Wild Card B Game): yes, the Browns did beat the Patriots in their only playoff matchup. Vinny Testaverde had a good game for Cleveland, throwing for 268 yards and a TD. Cleveland ultimately played a more disciplined game and although the Patriots scored a late FG and recovered the onside kick, Drew Bledsoe turned the ball over on downs with four straight incompletions to seal Cleveland's victory, the last playoff victory the city has seen as the Browns would get massacred by the Steelers in the Divisional Round. Buccaneers 20 vs Lions 10 (1997 NFC Wild Card B Game): in their first playoff win since 1979, the Buccaneers won the defensive battle as their offense managed to put up just enough points highlighted by Trent Dilfer's 9-yard TD pass and Mike Alsott's 31-yard rushing TD. Scott Mitchell was a horrendous 10-25 for just 78 passing yards while Barry Sanders choked yet again in the playoffs, rushing for just 65 yards. The Buccaneers would eventually get dropped by the Packers in the Divisional Round (you can read about that later on). Buccaneers 31 vs 49ers 6 (2002 NFC Divisional Round B Game): Brad Johnson led the Buccaneers with 196 yards and 2 TDs but it was Tampa Bay's defense that was the highlight, as they forced 5 49er turnovers and sacked 49ers QB Jeff Garcia 4 times as he had a forgettable performance throughout the game. I remember this game quite vividly as being the death of the 49er dynasty, although it had started fizzling out for the past few years already. As for the Buccaneers, they'd go on to win the Super Bowl. Cardinals 20 @ Cowboys 7 (1998 NFC Wild Card A Game): Jake Plummer led the Cards to an upset victory in Dallas with 213 yards and two TDs as Arizona got the franchises' first-ever playoff win since 1947 and the first in the Super Bowl era. Troy Aikman was completely shut down and didn't get a TD until garbage time in the fourth quarter. Arizona would, unfortunately, get smashed by the Vikings in the Divisional Round. Cardinals 30 vs Falcons 24 (2008 NFC Wild Card A Game): Kurt Warner had a great day for the Cards throwing two TD passes. Despite trailing 17-14 at the half, Arizona was the beneficiary of a fumble return and a rushing TD in the 3rd and later a safety in the 4th. Matt Ryan did his best to keep Atlanta in the game, including throwing a late TD pass to cut the deficit to 6, but Arizona was able to run out the clock with clutch Warner play to give the Cards their first home playoff victory in the Super Bowl era. These Cards would march on to the Super Bowl where they lost a heartbreaker to the Steelers, but before that, there was... Cardinals 32 vs Eagles 25 (2008 NFC Championship): Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald had themselves a field day in the first half as they connected on three TD passes as Arizona led 24-6 at the half. Donovan McNabb and Co would lead a dramatic comeback to take a 25-24 lead midway through the fourth, but Kurt Warner found some more magic late in the game and threw the go-ahead TD pass (along with 2-point conversion) with just under three minutes remaining. Arizona forced a turnover on downs to seal the deal. As mentioned, these Cards would lose in the Super Bowl. Chargers 20 vs Bills 14 (1980 AFC Divisional Round A Game): trailing 14-3 at halftime, the Chargers shutout the Bills in the second half but had to wait until just over 2 minutes remaining in the game to watch Dan Fouts throw the go-ahead 50-yard TD pass to win the game for San Diego. The ensuing Buffalo drive ended with an interception and San Diego got their first playoff win in the Super Bowl era. Unfortunately, they lost a heartbreaker in the AFC Championship to their Division Rivals the Raiders (read on to learn more about that one). Chargers 17 vs Chiefs 0 (1992 AFC Wild Card A Game): in a game dominated by San Diego's defense, KC never got the ball past the Chargers 34-yard line and were outgained 342-251 in total yards. Nevertheless, both teams were held scoreless in the first half but Marion Butts had a highlight-worthy 53-yard run to break the tie and put the Chargers up for good against their division rivals. Unfortunately, the Chargers were on the wrong end of a shutout against Dan Marino and the Dolphins in the Divisional Round. Chargers 23 @ Ravens 17 (2018 AFC Wild Card B Game): the Chargers held the Ravens scoreless in the first half and relied on 5 FGs and a Melvin Gordon TD run to pull out an unconventional win. The game really wasn't as close as the score indicated as Baltimore got their TDs late in the fourth quarter and the onside kick was easily recovered by LA to seal the deal. These Chargers would get outplayed by the Patriots in the Divisional Round. Colts 24 vs Vikings 14 (1968 NFL Western Conference Championship): this ancient game saw the Colts (in Baltimore at the time) lead 21-0 through three quarters and fend off a late Minnesota run to advance to the NFL Championship Game. Earl Morrall had two TD passes for Baltimore and they got additional help from a fumble return. These Colts would eventually make it to the Super Bowl where they were infamously defeated by Joe Namath and the Jets. Colts 21 @ Texans 7 (2018 AFC Wild Card A Game): the Texans got off to a terrible first-half start, going down 21-0 at the half, and they couldn't score until the 4th quarter. Andrew Luck and Marlon Mack were the offensive leaders of Indianapolis and they put up just enough to fend off their division rivals. These Colts would get knocked out by the Chiefs in the Divisional Round in what would be Andrew Luck's last game. Dolphins 34 vs Bengals 16 (1973 AFC Divisional Round B Game): the Bengals were hopelessly outmatched in this game as Miami outgained Cincinnati a whopping 400-194 including 241 yards on the ground. Although the score was 21-16 Miami at the half, Cincinnati would not score again as the Dolphins scored 13 unanswered to put the game away. This was just a stepping stone en route to a second-straight Super Bowl title. Dolphins 14 vs Jets 0 (1982 AFC Championship): this game was played in the miserable rain, and the conditions showed in the final score. What it doesn't tell you is that the game was scoreless at the half. Only one offensive TD was scored on a Woody Bennett 7-yard TD run in the third (the other came on an interception return). Speaking of INTs, Jets QB Richard Todd threw 5 of those and just 103 yards in an awful performance that no doubt contributed to another Jetsian performance. The Dolphins would thus advance the Super Bowl only to get outplayed by the Redskins. Eagles 58 vs Lions 37 (1995 NFC Wild Card A Game): this game was never even close. Philadelphia's offense had a field day and at one point led 51-7. Rodney Peete threw three TD passes while Barry Sanders choked again in the playoffs, rushing for just 40 yards. The Lions would make the game a little closer but that was mainly in garbage time and they suffered yet another first-round playoff loss. As for the Eagles, they'd lose to the Cowboys in the Divisional Round. Falcons 27 @ Saints 20 (1991 NFC Wild Card A Game): in a nice battle between the two division rivals, Chris Miller of the Falcons had a nice 291 yard 3 TD day including the game-winning 61-yard TD pass with just under 3 minutes remaining in the game. Atlanta went down 13-10 at the half but allowed just one more Saints TD and got an interception on New Orleans' final drive in Atlanta territory to pull off the win. Atlanta wound up getting beaten by the Redskins in the Divisional Round. 49ers 24 vs Lions 23 (1983 NFC Divisional Round A Game): Joe Montana would lead another one of his game-winning drives in this one capped off by a 24-yard TD pass with under two minutes to play. The Lions had a chance to make a very makeable 43-yard FG but it was booted with five seconds remaining, thus adding another chapter to Detroit's playoff ineptitude. These 49ers would, unfortunately, suffer a controversial defeat to the Redskins in the NFC Championship Game to cap off a season that some long-time 49er fans say they were robbed of another SB title. 49ers 30 vs Rams 3 (1989 NFC Championship): after the Rams went up 3-0 heading into the second, it was all Joe Montana and Co from there as the Rams could only gain 156 yards on the day and watched Montana complete 26-30 for 2 TDs. This game was a major snoozefest throughout from the casual fan's perspective but from a Niner fan perspective, just a pit stop en route to a second-straight Super Bowl title (an even more lopsided win at that). 49ers 14 vs Eagles 0 (1996 NFC Wild Card B Game): this game had some wild weather-related stuff throughout, as the field was muddy and wind speeds hit up to 62 mph. No wonder people hated Candlestick Park as much as they did. Unfortunately for the Eagles, it seemed that San Francisco's experience with such conditions gave them just the slightest advantage in an otherwise very sloppy and ugly game. Steve Young accounted for both TDs: 1 rushing and 1 passing. These 49ers would, unfortunately, get their butts kicked by the Packers (again... ) in the Divisional Round 35-14. 49ers 36 vs Saints 32 (2011 NFC Divisional Round A Game): this was a really exciting game that saw four TDs scored with under 5 minutes remaining. Drew Brees had an insane 462-yard game but it was Alex Smith who connected with Vernon Davis with nine seconds left in a play affectionately known among Niner fans as "The Catch III". Although the 49ers would lose a heartbreaker in the NFC Championship, I still consider this the climactic moment of Alex Smith's redemption season. 49ers 23 @ Panthers 10 (2013 NFC Divisional Round B Game): as a Niner fan, this game was intriguing as former NFC West rivals and overall satisfying to watch since we lost to Carolina 10-9 in the regular season. After a slow start, the 49ers held Carolina scoreless in the second half and Colin Kaepernick had a nice little Cam Newton Superman taunt celebration. The Carolina offense wasn't terrible, but Cam Newton threw two interceptions which were really costly. Unfortunately, these 49ers would lose a heartbreaking game in the NFC yes, as difficult as that will be, we will get to that one... Giants 17 vs Redskins 0 (1986 NFC Championship): Washington's offense had a terrible day and all the Giants had to do was put up just enough offense in the first half to win an otherwise ugly game against their division rivals. New York's defense held Washington to just 190 offensive yards while Redskins QB Jay Schroder was just 20-50 on the day. These Giants would go on to win the Super Bowl. Giants 24 @ Buccaneers 14 (2007 NFC Wild Card B Game): in Eli Manning's first playoff win, he didn't have his best game but his defense backed him up by forcing three turnovers and holding Tampa Bay to just 271 yards of offense. Manning still threw for two TDs and the game wasn't really as close as the final score indicated as Tampa Bay got their last TD late in the fourth. These Giants would march on to upset the undefeated Patriots in the Super Bowl, but before that, there was this amazing upset... Giants 21 @ Cowboys 17 (2007 NFC Divisional Round B Game): in a tight matchup between the two NFC East rivals, Brandon Jacobs scored early in the fourth quarter to put the Giants up for good. Dallas had a chance late in the game but Tony Romo threw an interception thus giving these Cowboys the dubious distinction of being the first #1 seed to be eliminated in the Divisional Round in a long time. As mentioned, these Giants would go on to win the SB. Giants 24 vs Falcons 2 (2011 NFC Wild Card B Game): this strange-looking score came about thanks to an intentional grounding mishap by Eli Manning early in the second quarter. However, the Giants would quickly recover as Manning had a 277 yard, 3 TD game while the defense held the Falcons scoreless throughout the rest of the game (including Falcons RB Michael Turner to just 64 yards on the ground). This was New York's first home playoff win since 2000 and surprisingly their first playoff victory since they upset the Patriots. Naturally, they'd do that again in this year's Super Bowl. Jaguars 62 vs Dolphins 7 (1999 AFC Divisional Round A Game): in Dan Marino's final game, he put up a complete stinker of a performance while the Jaguars put up 520 total offensive yards and at one point led 41-0. Marino would throw his only touchdown pass in the second quarter and the Dolphins offense went completely quiet in the second half. This game still stands as the playoff game with the most points scored by the winning team in the Super Bowl era. These Jaguars would go on to drop a stinker in the AFC Championship Game against the Titans (more on that later). Jets 34 vs Jaguars 24 (1998 AFC Divisional Round B Game): Vinny Testaverde led the Jets offense with 284 yards passing and a TD and while Mark Brunell kept the Jags in the game for most of the duration, they simply didn't have enough for New York and their high-octane offense. John Hall would kick a late field goal to all but seal the victory for the Jets. In typical Jets fashion, they once again found a way to lose in the AFC Championship, this time to John Elway and the Broncos. Oilers 17 @ Dolphins 9 (1978 AFC Wild Card): Houston outgained Miami 455-209 in the game and held Bob Griese to an ineffective game. On their end, Houston's Dan Pastorini threw for 306 yards and had a 10-point 4th quarter to put the game out of reach. The game only looks close because Houston gave Miami their only points of the second half by running out of the end zone as time expired to seal the victory. The Oilers would wind up marching all the way to the AFC Championship where they got destroyed by Terry Bradshaw and the Steelers. Oilers 23 vs Seahawks 20 OT (1987 AFC Wild Card): in a controversial game, it appeared in OT that Seattle intercepted a Warren Moon pass but the officials ruled it incomplete, thus allowing Moon to continue driving upfield and getting the game-winning FG. Houston outgained Seattle 427-250 but sloppy Oilers play kept Seattle in the game throughout. This was Houston's first playoff win in 8 years, but they were quickly ousted by John Elway and the Broncos in the Divisional Round. Oilers 24 @ Browns 23 (1988 AFC Wild Card): Warren Moon had an effective passing day and Houston kicked the FG to make it 24-16 with under two minutes remaining. This game was heartbreaking in hindsight for the Browns as the two-point conversion wasn't adopted until a few seasons later. While the Browns would drive upfield to make the game 24-22, they could only kick the XP, and although they would get the ball back with a few seconds remaining down 24-23, a couple of unfortunate penalties cost them a chance at driving for a game-winning field goal. The Oilers would get knocked out by the Bills in the Divisional Round. Oilers 17 vs Jets 10 (1991 AFC Wild Card B Game): Warren Moon had a good game with 278 yards and 2 TDs and after leading 14-10 at the half, Houston's defense stepped up and held the Jets scoreless through the second half to give the Oilers a close win over the Jets. Ken O'Brien of the Jets had a lousy second half and you can add this to the list of Jets playoff losses. These Oilers would suffer a close loss to the Broncos in the Divisional Round. Packers 30 vs Panthers 13 (1996 NFC Championship): the Panthers had a nice mini-Cinderella run to the NFC Championship, but it was Brett Favre and the Packer who put up a show and ran away with the game. It was just 17-10 Packers at the half, but Carolina could only manage another FG the rest of the way while the Packer offense never let up. To Carolina's credit, the game was played in freaking 8-degree weather and this was their first-ever game in Green Bay. Talk about baptism by fire. As for the Packers, they would go on to win Favre's only Super Bowl of his career. Packers 21 vs Buccaneers 7 (1997 NFC Divisional Round B Game): despite a rough day from Brett Favre, the Packer offense put up just enough highlighted by Reidel Anthony's 141 total yards in the game. Tampa Bay choked on several FG attempts which hurt their chances throughout the game. Despite all this, the Packers only led 13-7 after the third until a late TD drive in the fourth. The Packers would make it back to the Super Bowl only to lose to John Elway. Packers 21 @ Bears 14 (2010 NFC Championship): this game was very heartbreaking for Bears fans as starting QB Jay Cutler got knocked out (yeah, it sounds silly saying that right now, but playing with some guy named Caleb Hanie for most of the game doesn't help) and had a potential game-tying drive ended with an interception. Aaron Rodgers and Co did not hesitate to pounce on the handicap the Bears had to play with the entire game, and they pulled off the close one en route to Rodgers' only Super Bowl title to date. Panthers 29 @ Rams 23 2OT (2003 NFC Divisional Round A Game): this was a really exciting back-and-forth affair in regulation that saw St. Louis come back from a 23-12 deficit in the fourth quarter. Both teams squandered major opportunities in OT, but ultimately it was Carolina that found the winning touch as Jake Delhomme threw a 69-yard bomb to Steve Smith to advance the Panthers in their Cinderella run to the Super Bowl. Before that, there was... Panthers 14 @ Eagles 3 (2003 NFC Championship): Carolina completely stuffed the Eagles offense and Donovan McNabb for an ineffective game. DeShaun Foster made it a two-possession game in the third quarter with a rushing TD and the Panthers overall pulled out the slogfest. These Panthers would lose a Super Bowl in a heartbreaker to the Patriots. Panthers 23 @ Giants 0 (2005 NFC Wild Card B Game): Eli Manning's first playoff start was a disaster as he threw 3 INTs and could lead absolutely nothing on offense. On the flip side, Jake Delhomme had an effective passing day and he and Steve Smith accounted for all the offense (outside of John Kasay, who kicked 3 FGs). This was a superb win for the Wild Card Panthers en route to an NFC Championship Game appearance but before that, there was... Panthers 29 @ Bears 21 (2005 NFC Divisional Round B Game): the Panthers offense was on fire the whole game (434 yards of total offense), with Steve Smith having a monster 218 yard and 2 TD performance. Rex Grossman and the Bears did their best to keep up but ultimately it wasn't enough. These Panthers would get blown out in the NFC Championship Game to the Seahawks. Raiders 34 @ Chargers 27 (1980 AFC Championship): the Raiders started off red hot, leading 28-7 at one point, but San Diego put up a furious comeback only to have Oakland run out the last 6:52 of the game in yet another heartbreaking entry in San Diego sports history. Jim Plunkett had an effective game and came up clutch when holding off the Chargers. These Raiders would go on to win the Super Bowl. Rams 35 vs Cardinals 23 (1975 NFC Divisional Round A Game): at this point, the Rams were in LA and the Cardinals in St. Louis. Ron Jaworski completely lit up the Cards in the first half, and Los Angeles had a comfortable 28-9 lead heading into the second half. The Cardinals would do somewhat better in the second half but ultimately suffered another first-round playoff loss. These Rams would, unfortunately, suffer a blowout courtesy of Roger Staubach and the Cowboys in the NFC Championship Game. Rams 27 @ Seahawks 20 (2004 NFC Wild Card A Game): the Seahawks got a really unfortunate draw as they had to play the Rams who swept them in the regular season. It was a very tight battle between the two divisional rivals, but the Rams prevailed as Marc Bulgar came threw in the clutch, throwing a TD pass with just over two minutes remaining. The Seahawks drove into the red zone but turned over the ball on downs. This was the last playoff win for the Rams until 2018, and they would get destroyed in the Divisional Round by the Falcons. As for the 've never lost a home playoff game since. Ravens 16 @ Raiders 3 (2000 AFC Championship): this was the Baltimore D on show, but aside from a nice 96-yard pass from Trent Dilfer to Shannon Sharpe, this game didn't have too many offensive highlights. Oakland didn't help itself–nor the quality of the game–by gaining just 191 yards on the day. The game was never really close despite being 10-3 at one point. This was a pretty ugly game overall. The Ravens would go on to win the Super Bowl. Ravens 30 @ Chiefs 7 (2010 AFC Wild Card B Game): what should've been a nice welcome-back for the Chiefs who had gone the last three seasons without a playoff appearance instead turned into a butt-kicking courtesy of the Ravens. The Chiefs led after the first 7-3 and trailed just 10-7 at the half, but from there it was all Baltimore as they could not contain Joe Flacco. Unfortunately, the Ravens would get eliminated by the Steelers in the Divisional Round. Ravens 20 vs Texans 13 (2011 AFC Divisional Round B Game): this game looked to be a snoozefest after Baltimore took a 17-3 lead early on, but the Texans made things interesting by cutting the lead to just 17-13 at halftime. Although there would be just one more score: a Billy Cundiff FG to give Baltimore a 20-13 lead, the game was close enough throughout the second half to be exciting. A disappointing way for the Texans to end their first-ever playoff season, but still a great season overall. As for the Ravens, let's just say Billy Cundiff happened in the AFC Championship... Redskins 20 @ Eagles 6 (1991 NFC Wild Card A Game): the Eagles would take an early 6-0 lead in the first half, but from then on out it was all Redskins. Mark Rypien didn't have his best game but he was effective enough and Washington hounded Randall Cunningham all game. This was a feel-good game for the 'Skins as they avenged a 28-14 loss in the regular season to Philadelphia in which they had nine players, including all of their QBs wtf, knocked out of the game. The Eagles would proceed to taunt the Redskins by asking if they had enough body bags for their team in a game that has infamously gone down as "The Body Bag Game". Turns out Washington didn't forget and made the Eagles pay. Unfortunately, Washington would get thrashed by the 49ers 28-10 in the Divisional Round. Redskins 24 vs Falcons 7 (1992 NFC Divisional Round A Game): this was another crazy weather game with strong winds and rain. The Falcons clearly came in unprepared as although they trailed just 14-7 at the half, got completely shutout in the second half as the Mark Rypien and Co managed just enough offense to pull out an ugly win. This was a stepping stone en route to the Super Bowl title for these Redskins. Saints 45 vs Cardinals 14 (2009 NFC Divisional Round A Game): Drew Brees had three passing TDs and Reggie Bush got 217 all-purpose yards including a punt return for a TD and a 46-yard rushing TD to add more icing on the cake for New Orleans. On the defensive end, the Saints would shut out the Cardinals in the second half and force opposing QB Kurt Warner into an awkward game overall. These Saints would march on to the Super Bowl title that year. Saints 45 vs Lions 28 (2011 NFC Wild Card A Game): Drew Brees had a monster 466 yard 3 TD performance while Pierre Thomas added a rushing TD and completely overwhelmed the Lions. Matthew Stafford did his best to keep up with 380 yards and 3 TDs of his own but he also had two costly interceptions and the Lions were simply less disciplined on both sides of the ball in this game. Yet another entry in the annals of Lions playoff futility. These Saints would go on to lose a heartbreaker to the 49ers in the Divisional Round (you can read about that one in an earlier entry). Saints 31 vs Panthers 26 (2017 NFC Wild Card B Game): both Cam Newton and Drew Brees had monster 300+ yard passing games, but the Saints were simply able to convert on more opportunities and had a clutch 4th-down sack on Cam Newton to seal the game with four seconds left. Drew Brees was the slightly better QB with 376 yards and 2 TDs (compared to Newton's 349 yards and 2 TDs) and ultimately I feel QB experience won out in this matchup. These Saints would lose in heartbreaking fashion to the Vikings in the Divisional Round ("The Minneapolis Miracle"). Seahawks 23 vs 49ers 17 (2013 NFC Championship): yes, I promised we'd get here. We're in the Super Bowl again, so don't feel too bad for us. Let us have it, Seahawks fans, we know you're still somewhat rubbing this one in our faces. I know many Niner fans will say we got robbed and the refs screwed us this game, and while I don't deny all of those claims, let's just say that the Niners also had a sloppy second half and we have ourselves to blame for a lot of it. Marshawn Lynch was his usual self and Russell Wilson threw the go-ahead TD pass in the fourth and was clutch in the stretch to seal the win for the Seahawks who would go on to win the Super Bowl. Colin Kaepernick had a pass intercepted in the end zone to end a potential game-winning drive late in the fourth. For non-Niner fans, you have no idea how big the Week 17 win was for some of us. It wasn't a playoff game but it had all the implications of one, and we had not won in Seattle since this painful loss. With the NFC West title on the ropes, to finally get a win (and score 20+ points) in Seattle was the most joyous thing and arguably helped us get to the Super Bowl with the home-field bye advantage. It also arguably hurt Seattle's playoff chances. It almost felt like getting revenge on the Seahawks. Seahawks 26 vs Lions 6 (2016 Wild Card A Game): this game was dominated by Seattle's defense as Detroit was held to just 231 total yards. Despite all this, the Seahawks led just 10-6 going into the fourth and then, well, the fourth happened and Seattle's offense took over from there. Russell Wilson had a very effective day but it was Thomas Rawls who stole the show with 161 rushing yards. As for the playoff lolcow status continued with this dud of a performance. The Seahawks would get steamrolled by the Falcons in the Divisional Round. Seahawks 17 @ Eagles 9 (2019 Wild Card B Game): Russell Wilson had a great game with 325 yards passing (also, playing the backup QB from the Eagles) and while Philadelphia would keep the game close, they would ultimately come up short against the Seattle D. This game is notably odd for being a repeat of the regular season matchup where the Seahawks also beat the Eagles in Philadelphia. These Seahawks would lose a close and slightly controversial game against the Packers in the Divisional Round. Seahawks 10 @ Vikings 9 (2015 NFC Wild Card B Game): Minnesota's defense held stout throughout the game, shutting out the Seahawks through three quarters, but Seattle's offense finally found a groove and scored 10 unanswered in the fourth. Minnesota had a chance to take the lead with under 30 seconds then Blair Walsh had to do that. Why? These Seahawks would get handily beaten by the Panthers in the Divisional Round. Texans 27 vs Raiders 14 (2016 AFC Wild Card A Game): this game was kind of a gimme for Houston as they were playing a QB with just 1 game of experience prior. Nevertheless, they capitalized, leading 27-7 at one point as Brock Osweiler had an effective day, leading the Texans to a fairly easy win over the Raiders. The inexperience of Oakland QB Connor Cook really showed as he was just 18-45 for 161 yards and 3 interceptions. These Texans would get defeated by the Patriots in the Divisional Round. Texans 22 vs Bills 19 OT (2019 AFC Wild Card A Game): the Texans would come back from 16-0 down and kick the game-winner in OT. Despite being held scoreless in the first half, trailing 13-0 at halftime, Deshaun Watson caught fire in the second half and finished with 247 yards and a TD pass total (including 55 rushing yards and a rushing TD). In particular, Watson's TD pass came with just over 4:30 to play and while the Bills would kick a game-tying FG, Watson would lead the Texans down the field for an easy FG to win the game. The Texans would get massacred in the Divisional Round against the Chiefs despite leading 24-0 at one point. Titans 19 @ Colts 16 (1999 AFC Divisional Round B Game): despite the score saying otherwise, the Titans Eddie George had himself an amazing game on the ground, rushing for 162 yards and Tennessee's only TD. The game was not this close, as the Colts scored a TD late in the fourth quarter and had the onside kick recovered by Tennessee to hand Peyton Manning a playoff loss that would become all too common in his career. These Titans would make the Super Bowl only to lose in heartbreaking fashion to the Rams. But before that, they had this neat victory... Titans 33 @ Jaguars 14 (1999 AFC Championship): the Jaguars got really unfortunate with this one as they're the only 14-2 team to get swept by a division rival to, you guessed it, the Titans. The Jags would lead 14-10 at halftime but got completely shutout in the second half as they could not stop Steve McNair and they played sloppily on special teams (allowing a kickoff return) and had a terrible second half from Mark Brunell. The Titans thus won three games against the Jags. As mentioned, these Titans would lose to the Rams in the SB. Vikings 27 vs Browns 7 (1969 NFL Championship): for this one, we have to go way back. Thankfully, there's not really much to this game other than Minnesota completely destroyed Cleveland's defense despite Joe Kapp completing just 7 passes on the day. Cleveland's offense didn't fare much better as they waited until the 4th to score. As a result of winning this game, the Vikings went to the Super they got wrecked by the Chiefs.

Ideal for newcomers and veterans alike, the Pokémon flame is burning stronger than ever with this 3DS release, and it seems that Game Freak is hitting its stride just in time to deliver its first home console adventure on Nintendo Switch next year. Areajugones - Ramón Baylos - 8. 8/10. 0 The new Game Freak game will please both newcomers and more experienced players because, although some sections of this new installment have received less polish, it still has attractive enough content for every trainer to find his place in the new region of Galar. Vooks - Oliver Brandt - 100/100 Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon represent everything Game Freak has worked towards in its 20 years of growing the Pokémon franchise. It has its flaws, as every game does, but they don't detract from the lively world, incredible writing, and sheer fun that the game provides. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are likely the last big games to be released on the 3DS, and Game Freak sees the console out with a game that will be remembered as a shining example of what the series can do when at its best. Gamespot - Kallie Plagge 90/100 In collecting, battling, and exploring, Sword and Shield cut out the bloat and focus on what makes these pillars of the Pokemon games so captivating in the first place. You're not held back by overly complicated back-end systems or hoops to jump through; from the outset, you can start wandering the Galar region, seeing its new Pokemon, and trying out its new battle strategies with very little in your way. This leaves you free to enjoy what Pokemon is all about, and that makes for an incredibly strong showing for the series' proper debut on Switch. GamesRadar - Sam Loveridge 90/100 Gameplay tweaks and attention to detail make Pokemon Sword and Shield the most compelling Pokemon world to date EGM- Ray Carsillo- 80/100 The first new-generation Pokémon game to release on a proper home console does not disappoint. New features like Dynamaxing and the Wild Area are fun additions that make the experience of becoming a Pokémon champion still feel fresh. It’s just a shame that Game Freak didn’t lean into the new features more than they did. Nintendo Life - Alex Olney - 8 / 10 Pokémon Sword and Shield succeed in bringing some new ideas to the table, but they’re also somewhat guilty of not pushing things far enough. What’s done right is done right, but what’s done wrong feels like it’s come from a decade-old design document. There are moments contained within that are best the series has ever been, but this joy is at times spoiled by contrasting moments that left us disappointed and did not match up to the rest of what the rest of these games can offer. What we've got here is an experience full of highs and lows, from the unadulterated wonder and joy of seeing a brand-new Pokémon in a stadium full of cheering crowds, to the monotonous and dragged-out dialogue we just wanted to skip. Ars Technica - Andrew Cunningham - Unscored The short version of this review is that Sword and Shield are fun, good-looking Pokémon games with a solid story mode and some welcome changes to the game’s mechanics. Daily Star - Dom Peppiatt - 3 / 5 stars Pokémon Sword and Shield are not bad games. But fun character arcs and inventive, creative designs of new ‘mon are often offset by poor pacing and restrictive world world of Galar is charming, and is a Pokémon interpretation of Britain I’ve dreamed of since I was a kid, but between gating what Pokémon you can catch behind Gym Badges, some half-baked route/City designs and a modest amount of post-game content, Sword and Shield can only be called ‘good’ Pokémon games… not ‘great’ ones. Eurogamer - Chris Tapsell - No Recommendation / Blank Pok'mon Sword and Shield add some brilliant new creatures, but like their gargantuan Dynamax forms, the games feel like a hollow projection. Game Informer - Brian Shea - 8. 8 / 10 The compelling formula of simultaneously building your collections of monsters and gym badges has proven timeless, but the new additions and enhancements show Pokémon isn't done evolving GameSpot - Kallie Plagge - 9 / 10 Pokemon Sword and Shield scale down the bloated elements of the series while improving what really matters, making for the best new generation in years. GameXplain - Liked Video Review - Quote not available Gameblog - Julien Inverno - French - 7 / 10 With these new games Pokémon, Game Freak proceeds as usual in the evolution of the series, small touches, all the more welcome this time they seem absolutely necessary today, like the boxes PC accessible everywhere. Without major disruption but with significant improvements, in terms of game comfort mainly, and while some will probably deplore the reduced number of Pokémon referenced base in the Pokédex Galar, new region that enjoys a care of atmosphere and staging undeniable, Pokémon remains faithful to its formula still winning for over twenty years, at the risk of missing the evolutionary step offered and hoped for by its convergence with the so popular Nintendo Switch. That said, the proposal is still effective for those for whom risk taking is secondary and of course the newcomers, especially children, the first public concerned and whose generations succeed and always succumb to the charm of those offered over the years by Pokémon. GamesRadar+ - Sam Loveridge - 4. 5 / 5 stars Gameplay tweaks and attention to detail make Pokemon Sword and Shield the most compelling Pokemon world to date. IGN - Casey DeFreitas - 9. 3 / 10 Pokemon Sword and Shield are the best games in the series, streamlining its most tedious traditions without losing any of the charm. Kotaku - Gita Jackson - Unscored The magic of Pokémon is that it lets you tap into a sense of wonder that becomes more and more difficult to access as an adult. Sword and Shield do that more successfully than any Pokémon release has in years. It won’t be everything to everyone, and it will not make everyone happy. I’m not sure it needs to. It’s a portal to a new world. Metro GameCentral - 7 / 10 The furore over Dexit may be overblown but even without it this is an underwhelming and unambitious attempt to modernise Pokémon and expand its horizons. Polygon - Nicole Carpenter - Unscored The surprise in Sword and Shield is that I’m still finding things that surprise me, even after putting in so many hours. It’s in how Game Freak has made a linear game feel so much less linear. VG247 - Alex Donaldson - 3 / 5 stars Pokemon Sword & Shield is all too often a bit disappointing, and in some places actually feels a little unfinished, but it also fully provides that warm, fuzzy feeling that one expects from the series. Crucially, even through frustration, never once did I think about putting it down, which is to its credit. It comes recommended almost for the Galar setting and new Pokemon alone, but with a long list of caveats indeed. JeuxVideo - L'avis de Kaaraj - French - 80/100 Pokémon Sword / Shield is offered some new very appreciable. Its artistically beautiful world, its more pronounced work on the realization, but also its new generation of Pokémon as well as several additions like the presence of a last part slightly reworked compared to the precedents make it a convincing opus. Its still very classic structure, its overall lack of difficulty and its technical shortcomings - aliasing in docked mode, clipping - however prevent it from claiming the status of unavoidable. The model of the wild lands and faults present there, however, brings a real good idea to the certain potential for the rest of the series, which we hope to see return on next episodes Switch. Everyeye. i - Francesco "Cydonia" Cilurzo- French - 85/100 Pokémon Sword and Shield are complex and convincing games: a solid plot, a more varied gameplay and a very thoughtfully-created level design are the hallmarks of this new pokémon generation.

It makes me very happy and is such a fitting conclusion to this series of posts that the most elaborate and supportive reply would come from the most passionate critic of the first ever posts. A positive message of hope. Mistakes are opportunities for each of us to grow and learn from. Just like I painfully had to learn not to put all my eggs in the same basket in the s08e07 theory. 10/10 redemption arc. Thank you CaveLupum <3 P. S. You are right in saying some of the clues are debatable on their own. I think one could probably find a way to deny each of them, if he tried hard enough. But it is the collection of these inconsistencies, all converging towards the same outcome, that makes this theory so strong. As for me, the only clue I would need was Martin sitting Bran on the Iron Throne. There is less than 1/1, 000, 000 chance that George is that type of writer.
